Very Sharp Teeth

Paladins of the Storm Lord 300 DPICome see me at the Bold Strokes Author’s blog where I’m talking about how I came up with the aliens at the heart of Paladins of the Storm Lord! Hint, it has to do with sharp teeth. 🙂

It also has to do with never giving up, a topic close to my heart.

And if you want to see me in person and ask me about it, I’ll be at the Jewel Book Club in Dallas on Tuesday, May 17th!

Anyone else love book clubs?

Happy May 1st! Release day, part one: book trailer!

It’s time for Paladins of the Storm Lord! *Kermit flail*

Books, books, books!

Books, books, books!

Blurb for ya:

Surrounded by dead crewmates, marooned above an unknown planet, the bridge crew of the Atlas awakens from a crash with extraordinary mental abilities. When their most powerful member jettisons their passengers to the planet below, they have an unprecedented opportunity: they can become gods.

Two hundred years later, Lieutenant Cordelia Ross is a paladin serving the Storm Lord, her city’s patron deity. Her faith is absolute until her people are attacked by a native species, harmless creatures turned devious by an unknown hand. Cordelia tries to solve the mystery of their development before they kill anyone else, but the secrets surrounding them are too deep. As orders from the Storm Lord begin to value obedience over integrity, Cordelia wonders whose side her god is really on.

Thrall releases! Somebody bring some pie!

Happy release day!

Please help me welcome Thrall: Beyond Gold and Glory with it’s new trailer!

And here’s the link.

Just in case you really want to know what the book is about, here’s the blurb:

Like heroes from an ancient tale, Aesa and Maeve plan to raid foreign shores, claiming gold and glory for their homeland. Young and in love, neither considers what will happen if one is chosen to be a warrior and the other is left behind.

On a mist-shrouded island, Aesa meets Ell, a woman enslaved by an insidious curse. Maeve walks the path of dark magic and finds Laret, a woman well acquainted with pain. Together, they must break the magic surrounding Ell, an act that will force them to choose between their dreams, their homes, and the women they love

It features lesbian romance and a trans character, and I hope you love it as much as I do. ❤

Happenings are afoot!

The official release date for Thrall: Beyond Gold and Glory is less than a week away, though you can still buy it off the BSB webstore. Look for a trailer in the coming days. I’m so excited for this one, the first book after the Katya and Starbride series. It’s already gotten one good review due to its presence on NetGalley, and I’m hoping for more! If you happen to spot a review for it, give me a shout. Sometimes I miss them despite my best efforts.

In case you missed it, I blogged about my experiences writing a Viking-esque novel on the BSB blog. Make sure to check it out. Thrall also got a cool shout-out on Okazu! Very awesome.

On Sunday, September 20th, I’ll be at Reverchon Park in Dallas for the 2015 Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade and Festival. Bold Strokes Books is in the orange section, booths 8 and 9, near the family zone. You’ll also find Carsen Taite, Laydin Michaels, MJ Williamz, VK Powell, and David Swatling. If you’re in town, please come out and say hi!

On October 14-17th, I’ll be at Women’s Week in Provincetown with a lot of BSB authors.

Anyone looking forward to these events? Where can I find you?

A review and a contest!

Thrall has a review at All Our Worlds! And before it’s even out, too. Aw, all grown up. *sniff*

And if you’d like to be able to leave your own review (*cough* massive hint *cough*), then just leave a comment here, and you’ll be entered to win your own copy of Thrall! If you’re inside the US, you can choose from a signed paperback or an e-book. If you’re outside the US, it’s a shiny ebook for you!

But wait, there’s more! If you share or retweet the flogging of this blog from either my facebook or Twitter feeds, you’ll be entered to win again! That’s three chances to throw your name in the hat. The winner will be drawn on Monday 8/17. Fingers crossed! Er, as much as I can… 🙂

So comment here, share the post about this blog from my facebook or retweet it from my twitter feed, and you can win!

Thrall Beyond Gold and Glory 300 DPI

Tidbits

Thrall Beyond Gold and Glory 300 DPIAs I work furiously on Coils, I have a few things to share. First of all, my September release, Thrall: Beyond Gold and Glory is right around the corner. Stay tuned for giveaways, and come see me on the Bold Strokes Author’s blog on September 1st. Writing this book was quite the palate cleanser after ending the Katya and Starbride books. The world is grittier, but no less interesting (I hope.) ^_^ I hope everyone enjoys reading it as much as I did writing it. I’m working on the trailer right now, so make sure you check back for that. It will be silly. Guaranteed.

Paladins of the Storm Lord 300 DPINext, I have a release date for the first novel in my sci-fi Godfall series, Paladins of the Storm Lord. It comes out May 2016! I can hardly wait for this one. It’s a story I started ages and ages ago. I remember scribbling in a notebook while I waited for a parade to start at Mardi Gras in the late 90’s when I was in college. I ended up writing a short story set in the same universe in 2003, and it got second place in the 2004 Isaac Asimov Award for Undergraduate Excellence in Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing. Soon after, I dug the book back and out, and it went through several transitions before becoming what it is today.

You can find me at Dallas Pride on September 20th. Some people have asked me why I don’t plan to have a table at Austin Pride, and I can only say that I heard from other booksellers that people at that festival didn’t seem interested in buying books. Since the Austin pride festival is in a park rather than along a street, it seemed to have more of a party atmosphere to me. An excellent party, but still not interested in buying books. ^_^

On October 14th-18th, I’ll be at Women’s Week in Provincetown. Bold Strokes will be having a week of talks and readings, including a panel moderated by yours truly. Stay tuned for more details.

51wYpaLyQiL._SX311_BO1,204,203,200_Last but certainly not least, my friend Shei Darksbane has published an urban fantasy along with Annathesa Nikola Darksbane called, Awakened (Auralight Codex: Dakota Shepherd Book 1). Shei was kind enough to send me a copy, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sexy lesbian vampires? Yes, please. It’s practically a steal on Kindle right now, so get it while it’s hot.

What’s going on in your world? Where can I find you?

The ArmadilloCon report

I hide behind your microphone

I hide behind your microphone

My arthritis and I had a tiring but ultimately fulfilling day at ArmadilloCon 2015. We started with a night panel on Friday titled, “Badass, Babe, or None of the Above: Are Women’s Archetypes Evolving (or Not) in SF/F Literature.”

The verdict: Yes, they are. We touched on how our literature and our society was slowly getting more gendered as we moved through the 2000’s but how there seemed to be a push-back against that. We predicted we’d be seeing more women in literature taking on a variety of roles without any character feeling the need to point out their woman-ness.
On Saturday, I had a reading with my Broad Universe buddies, where I read from the first Thrall Beyond Gold and Glory 300 DPIchapter of Thrall: Beyond Gold and Glory. There were some nods. I distinctly remember someone saying, “Sounds interesting.” 🙂

On Saturday night, I had “How Would Alien Life Affect Us?” We panelists were torn on this one. If we discovered alien microbes, we decided that most people probably wouldn’t care. But if we discovered intelligent life that we could recognize as intelligent, we all had a different predictions for what society might do. I said we’d seen so many alien disaster movies, that widespread panic might be in the cards.
Late Saturday, we talked about SF movies from last year and found we couldn’t agree on anything save that Mad Max: Fury Road was well worth the price of admission, and that most of us didn’t enjoy Jurassic World.

BAW and Trakena Prevost

On Sunday, my friend Trakena Prevost and I spoke on a panel about “Writing Fiction from a Gender, Ethnic, Cultural, or Temporal Viewpoint Other Than Your Own.” We agreed that research is key, including talking to people of whatever viewpoint you’re trying to write from. I spoke a lot about writing a trans character in Thrall.

I also got two new prints from the art show and sold one book. All in all, a good showing for a small but very interesting con. I hope to come back next year.

My next stop is Women’s Week in Provincetown MA in October. I hope to see you there!

The Fiend Queen is here!

But don’t run for the hills, check this out:

Here’s the link.

You can get The Fiend Queen today from the BSB webstore! They sell eBooks in formats compatible with every tablet, smartphone, and eReader. And they offer a 10% discount on purchases over $25. And AND you can now purchase paperback/eBook bundles of any title, at a net discount.

If you’re looking for more fantasy books, check out BSB titles by Cate Culpepper, Jane Fletcher, Shea Godfrey, Merry Shannon, Lesley Davis, and Maggie Morton. BSB also has plenty of other genres to choose from, so have a long look around.

Thanks so much for sticking with me until the end, people. I really appreciate it. I’ll be blogging here and on the BSB blog on Jan 6th, when I’ll be having another Fiend Queen giveaway, so stay tuned!
